Find the Why! Privacy Policy

Effective Date: August 1, 2026   |   Last Updated: August 1, 2026

This Privacy Policy supersedes the prior policy last updated August 1, 2025.

1. Introduction and scope

Find the Why! (“FTW!” or the “Platform”) is operated by Symphony Workforce, LLC (“Symphony Workforce,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, retain, and protect personal information when people visit www.findthewhy.org, use the FTW! application or mobile experience, create or manage an account, participate in Industry Challenges, complete assessments or Micro-Credentials, build an FTW! Digital Resume™, communicate with us, or use related FTW! services that link to this Policy (collectively, the “Services”).

This Policy does not govern a third-party website or service that has its own privacy policy. When a school, district, employer, college, program sponsor, or other organization provides a separate notice governing its own collection or use of information, that organization’s notice also applies to its practices.

2. Eligibility and users ages 13–17

The Services are intended for users age 13 and older. We do not knowingly permit a child under 13 to create an FTW! account or knowingly collect personal information directly from a child under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we will suspend the account and delete the child’s personal information unless retention is legally required or we implement a legally compliant parental-consent process before further collection or use.

A user age 13 through 17 may use the Services only with authorization from the user’s school or district, or permission and supervision from a parent or legal guardian, as applicable. State law may provide additional protections or require consent for particular uses of a minor’s information. FTW! does not knowingly sell a minor’s personal information or use it for targeted advertising.

3. Our role when schools use FTW!

Depending on the program and data involved, FTW! may process student information for a school or district under an agreement and its instructions, or may process information for FTW!’s own disclosed purposes. School-authorized educational records remain subject to the applicable agreement, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) when applicable, state student-privacy laws, and school or district requirements. We do not use school-controlled education records for advertising or for an unrelated commercial purpose.

A parent, eligible student, or school seeking access to or correction of a school-controlled education record may be directed to the school or district responsible for that record. FTW! will support the school’s response as required by contract and law.

4. Information we collect

A. Information users, parents, schools, and partners provide

  • Account and identity information, such as name, username, password or authentication credentials, date of birth or age, email address, telephone number, city/state, school, district, grade, teacher, program, graduation year, and parent or guardian information when applicable.
  • Profile and career information, such as interests, goals, education and employment history, career preferences, industry interests, availability, qualifications, and information placed on an FTW! profile or Digital Resume™.
  • Assessment and development information, including assessment responses and results, Workplace Readiness information, DISC or similar reports and links, Values Index, 20 Tenets, peer validation, Micro-Credentials, stack progress, certifications, and related evidence.
  • Challenge and participation information, including Industry Challenge selections, team membership, written work, research, solution documents, presentations, uploads, scores, rankings, feedback, awards, scholarship or prize eligibility, and participation history.
  • Content and communications, including support requests, survey responses, stories, photographs, audio, video, documents, messages, and other material submitted to or through the Services.
  • Opportunity and verification information, such as applications, interview or opportunity preferences, eligibility information, screening status, and confirmations supplied for internships, apprenticeships, scholarships, education, employment, or related opportunities. Separate vendors may provide their own notices for background screening or other regulated services.
  • Information supplied by a school, district, teacher, parent, employer, college, program sponsor, service provider, or other authorized source.

B. Information collected automatically

  • Device and network information, such as IP address, browser, operating system, device type, language, referring page, and approximate location derived from IP address.
  • Usage and security information, such as login time, pages and features used, clicks, session identifiers, diagnostic logs, error reports, and activity used to operate, secure, and improve the Services.
  • Cookies and similar technologies used for authentication, preferences, security, performance, and analytics. We do not use student personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

FTW! does not request precise geolocation, biometric identifiers, government-issued identifiers, financial-account information, or health information from ordinary student accounts unless a clearly identified feature requires the information, provides an additional notice, and obtains any consent required by law.

5. How we use personal information

  • Provide, authenticate, personalize, administer, support, and secure the Services.
  • Create profiles and Digital Resumes; deliver Industry Challenges, assessments, Micro-Credentials, peer validation, AI-supported guidance, feedback, and progress tools.
  • Match or connect eligible users with education, employment, internship, apprenticeship, scholarship, military, mentorship, or other opportunities when the user, parent, school, or applicable program has authorized the connection.
  • Communicate about accounts, programs, deadlines, safety, support, policy changes, and requested opportunities.
  • Administer teams, scoring, awards, prizes, scholarships, eligibility, and program reporting.
  • Evaluate and improve usability, accessibility, content, reliability, security, outcomes, and program effectiveness.
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, misuse, safety risks, security incidents, and violations of applicable terms.
  • Comply with law, legal process, contracts, audits, and legitimate requests from schools or public authorities.
  • Create and use aggregate, deidentified, or statistical information as described in Section 6.

We do not use personal information for a materially different purpose without providing any additional notice or obtaining any consent required by law.

6. Aggregate, deidentified, and statistical information

“Aggregate information” combines information about multiple people or activities so that it does not identify a particular person. “Deidentified information” is information that cannot reasonably be linked to an identified or identifiable person, household, or device after reasonable measures are applied.

FTW! will take reasonable measures designed to prevent aggregate or deidentified information from being associated with a particular person; will publicly commit to maintaining and using deidentified information without attempting to reidentify it, except when permitted by law to test whether deidentification controls are effective; and will require recipients to maintain the information in deidentified form when applicable. Aggregate and deidentified information is not treated as personal information to the extent applicable law excludes it from that definition.

FTW! may retain aggregate and properly deidentified information for longer than identifiable information because it no longer identifies an individual. FTW! will not label information “aggregate” or “deidentified” merely because direct identifiers have been removed if the remaining information can still reasonably identify or be linked to a person.

7. When we disclose information

We may disclose personal information as follows:

  • Service providers. Vendors that provide hosting, cloud infrastructure, authentication, communications, analytics, assessment, credentialing, support, security, document, AI, payment, or other operational services, subject to appropriate contractual limits.
  • Schools and authorized educational personnel. Schools, districts, teachers, counselors, program administrators, and other personnel authorized to administer participation, review progress, provide support, or meet school obligations.
  • User-directed opportunity recipients. Employers, colleges, scholarship providers, apprenticeship sponsors, military representatives, mentors, or other opportunity partners when the user, parent, school, or program has authorized the disclosure or the user affirmatively submits information to them.
  • Challenge participants and reviewers. Approved teammates, facilitators, judges, sponsors, or mentors may receive the information necessary to administer, review, score, or support a challenge. Public display or promotional use of identifiable student content requires the applicable authorization.
  • Professional advisers and organizational transactions. Auditors, insurers, attorneys, accountants, funders performing appropriate diligence, and parties to a merger, financing, reorganization, acquisition, or transfer, subject to confidentiality and legal requirements.
  • Legal, safety, and security disclosures. Government authorities or other recipients when reasonably necessary to comply with law or legal process; enforce terms; protect rights, property, safety, and security; or investigate fraud or misconduct.
  • At the user’s direction or with consent. Other recipients when the user or authorized decision-maker requests or permits the disclosure.
  • Aggregate or deidentified disclosures. Any appropriate recipient for the purposes described in Section 6, provided the information does not reasonably identify an individual.

FTW! does not sell personal information for money. FTW! does not sell student personal information, use student personal information for targeted advertising, or disclose school-controlled education records for an unrelated commercial purpose. Some state laws define “sale,” “sharing,” or “targeted advertising” broadly; eligible users may exercise applicable opt-out rights through the process in Section 12.

8. Profiles, teams, and Digital Resumes

The visibility of information depends on the feature, program, user selections, and applicable school or parent controls. Information designated as private is not intended for public display. Team members and authorized facilitators may see information necessary for collaboration. A Digital Resume or opportunity profile may be shared with an opportunity partner only as disclosed in the interface, directed by the user, or authorized through the applicable school, parent, or program process.

Users should not upload highly sensitive personal information, another person’s confidential information, or content they are not authorized to share. FTW! may restrict visibility or remove content to protect users, comply with law, or enforce applicable terms.

9. AI-supported features

FTW! may provide AI-supported tools, including guidance, feedback, search, summarization, or an AI Advisor. User inputs and relevant account or program context may be processed to provide the requested feature, monitor safety, prevent abuse, and improve the reliability of FTW!’s implementation. FTW! will not permit a third-party AI provider to use school-controlled student personal information to train the provider’s general-purpose models unless specifically authorized by the applicable school or authorized decision-maker and permitted by law. AI output may be incomplete or incorrect and should not be treated as the sole basis for an education, employment, eligibility, or other consequential decision.

10. Cookies and analytics

We use necessary cookies and similar technologies to sign users in, remember settings, maintain sessions, prevent fraud, and secure the Services. We may also use limited analytics to understand performance and feature use. Where required, we provide a cookie preference tool or obtain consent before using nonessential technologies. Browser settings may block some technologies, but doing so may prevent certain features from working.

The Services do not respond uniformly to “Do Not Track” signals. Where applicable law requires recognition of an approved universal opt-out mechanism, FTW! will process that signal as required.

11. Data retention

We retain identifiable information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including providing the Services, maintaining authorized student records, conducting longitudinal studies and program evaluation, meeting school or program requirements, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements, protecting security, and complying with law. When reasonably practicable, longitudinal studies use aggregate or deidentified information. Retention periods vary by information type, study, program, contract, and legal obligation.

When information is no longer reasonably necessary, we delete it, deidentify it, or securely isolate it from further use. School-controlled records are deleted or returned as required by the applicable agreement and law. Backup copies may remain for a limited period before routine deletion. Aggregate and properly deidentified information may be retained as described in Section 6.

12. Privacy rights and choices

Depending on residence and applicable law, a person may have the right to confirm whether we process personal information; access, correct, or delete information; obtain a portable copy; opt out of sale, targeted advertising, or certain profiling; limit certain uses of sensitive information; withdraw consent; and appeal a denied request.

Submit a request by emailing support@findthewhy.org, calling 402-850-8266, or writing to the address in Section 18. We may verify identity and authority before responding. A parent or legal guardian may submit a request for a minor when permitted by law. If information is controlled by a school or district, we may direct the request to that organization. We will not discriminate against a person for exercising an applicable privacy right.

Authorized agents may submit requests where permitted by law. If we deny an appealable request, our response will explain how to appeal and, where required, how to contact the appropriate regulator or attorney general.

13. Communications and marketing choices

Account, safety, service, and program administration messages may be necessary to provide the Services. Promotional email may be stopped using the unsubscribe link or by contacting us. Opting out of promotional messages does not stop non-promotional service communications. FTW! does not use school-controlled student personal information for commercial marketing unrelated to the authorized educational or workforce program.

14. Security

We maintain reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information, including access controls, authentication, encryption where appropriate, monitoring, vendor management, incident response, and staff practices. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Users should protect passwords and promptly report suspected unauthorized access.

15. International users

The Services are operated from the United States. Information may be processed and stored in the United States and other locations where approved service providers operate. Where applicable law requires a transfer mechanism or additional rights, we will use an appropriate mechanism and provide those rights.

16. State and regional disclosures

Residents of certain states may have additional rights. FTW! will honor rights required by applicable law even when those rights are not listed separately in this Policy. California residents may have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, subject to its applicability, definitions, and exceptions. Nebraska residents may have rights under the Nebraska Data Privacy Act, subject to its applicability and exceptions. State student-privacy laws and school contracts may provide protections beyond general consumer privacy laws.

During the preceding 12 months, FTW! may have collected the categories described in Section 4, used them for the purposes in Sections 5 and 6, and disclosed them to the recipient categories in Section 7. FTW! does not sell personal information for money and does not knowingly sell or share personal information of users under 16 for targeted advertising.

17. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy to reflect changes in law, technology, or the Services. We will post the updated Policy and revise the “Last Updated” date. If a change materially affects how we use or disclose personal information, we will provide additional notice and obtain consent when required. Continued use does not replace consent where law requires affirmative consent.
